REDACTING PDF’S THE CORRECT WAY

Don’t cause a Privacy catastrophe when posting PDF’s Publicly

Maybe once in your lifetime you may be required to redact some information on a PDF Document.Redaction can and should be used to cover information such as Social Security Numbers, competitive information and even images. In a properly redacted file, formatting elements such as spacing remain unchanged, while classified information appears as a black box.Sounds easy, right? Just highlight the text, change the highlight color to match the font color and everything disappears.

It’s Not so easy  apparently as the Government recently found out that the hard way when they inadvertently Released the Private information of  Deric Lostutter in the case of United States v. Deric Lostutter. They apparently thought that simply copying  black boxes on top of the text they were trying to hide, not knowing that these could be removed in a basic PDF reader, or that the hidden text could be copied into the clipboard and read in any word processor.

The Balance has Published a link that shows you how to properly Redact information from a PDF in a word.

Hopefully next time you and i do it we we will be better prepared and stop a catastrophe.
