Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 19631. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world. The OAU was transformed into the African Union (AU) on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May1.

Today is Africa Day and it marks the 60th anniversary of the OAU, which represented 55 member states. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”. The day is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the African people and to reflect on the challenges and opportunities for the future234.
